What is Anorectal Manometry?
Anorectal manometry is a diagnostic technique that measures the muscle contractions in the anus and rectum. Using a small balloon inserted into the rectum, the procedure gently distends the area, while a pressure sensor at the internal anal sphincter records the muscle responses, specifically assessing the rectosphincteric reflex. This test provides valuable insights into the function and coordination of these muscles, aiding in accurate diagnosis and treatment planning.
What Is It Used For?
Anorectal manometry is used to evaluate bowel function in patients with issues such as constipation, faecal incontinence, or other anorectal disorders. By measuring the muscle reflexes and coordination, it helps identify abnormalities that may contribute to these conditions, guiding the most effective treatment approach. This procedure is available with Ms Adele Burgess at our private rooms at 10 Martin Street, Heidelberg, providing a comfortable, specialised environment for assessment.
