Sacral Nerve Stimulation

Medtronic Bowel Control Therapy, delivered through a neuromodulation system, is an advanced, FDA-approved treatment that helps restore the communication between the brain and the sacral nerves, which control bowel function. When this communication is disrupted, it can lead to bowel incontinence. By using gentle electrical pulses to stimulate the sacral nerves, this therapy addresses the root cause, helping improve bowel control and allowing you to resume normal activities.

Sacral neuromodulation is particularly useful when other treatments for faecal incontinence have not provided sufficient relief. To determine if it’s the right solution for you, we offer a two-week trial period. During this evaluation, a temporary electrode lead is carefully placed near your sacral nerves, connecting to an external stimulator box that delivers mild pulses to the targeted area.

During the trial period, the leads are securely held in place, supported by dressings to minimise movement. While the trial is underway, we’ll provide specific guidance on activity restrictions to ensure optimal results. This approach allows us to assess whether Medtronic Bowel Control Therapy is likely to provide long-term benefit, helping you manage incontinence with confidence and comfort.

Stage One – Trial

In the first stage, or trial phase, a temporary lead is carefully inserted near your sacral nerves. This lead contains four electrodes that allow us to test different settings and determine the most effective stimulation level for you. One end of the lead connects to an external test stimulator, which sends gentle electrical pulses to the sacral nerves. The lead is secured with dressings, and we’ll provide specific guidelines for this period. Both Stage 1 and Stage 2 surgeries are minor and generally well tolerated, even by elderly patients.

During this phase, you’ll have a small incision (5-6 cm) on your upper buttock/hip area and a smaller one at the top of your bottom cleft. Some discomfort, similar to a bruise, may be felt at the incision sites, but this generally heals quickly. We will prescribe pain relief to manage any post-surgical discomfort.

Stage Two – Permanent Sacral Nerve Stimulation

If the trial phase is successful, you will proceed to Stage 2, where a permanent stimulator is implanted. This stimulator, similar to a heart pacemaker, is placed under the skin in the fat tissue over your buttock, where you may feel a slight ‘bump.’ The device provides long-term sacral nerve stimulation, helping to manage bowel function effectively.

Sacral Nerve Stimulator surgery is performed by Ms Adele Burgess at Warringal Private Hospital.
